Blogging and Proofreading… stress-free
I have come to enjoy blogging lately… it’s a great outlet for many things spinning around in my head, but it was not always the case.
When I first started, as with most people, I struggled to find a topic to write, once I had the blog post written, then I would proofread it and then edit, edit and more editing. It became a task I did not relish, at all.
I queried several other Virtual Assistants (VAs) to find out how they were dealing with this issue – and many had the same frustration. Listening to their advice, and some of it came from top VAs and great bloggers, I made a decision about my blog. Once I accepted this decision my blogging took off.
I found it less stressful and more enjoyable. I got excited about sharing my thoughts, which is primarily what blogging is all about.
So… what ‘decision’ did I make? What could change to improve my outlook and ability to blog and blog even more than I did before?
The decision to not stress endlessly about having a typo show up that I missed, but instead to read aloud, edit and proof once and then hit the publish button. I also made a conscious decision to write as I talk… and that does not always mean my commas, dots and dashes are in the proper places, but it certainly makes my writing seem as if I am talking, and that is important to me and my online presence.
My choice doesn’t mean I don’t proofread my blog at all, it’s inherent in me and my way of working that I must proof and edit my work. I proof, read it aloud and even rewrite some areas to make things flow better, to help me get my point across. But sometimes small items get overlooked and those items I no longer worry about. An article or post fraught with errors would never look good, but if a small item gets through the proofing process – then so it does… not a big deal.
Spelling and typing mistakes along with grammatical mistakes can happen to everyone, especially in this day of computers and typing. You may not spell poorly when writing on paper, but typing can add a whole new dimension to spelling errors – even with spell checkers.
Now, some people may think I have made a bad choice, given that I am a Virtual Assistant and in a line of business meant to help other business owners put their best foot forward. But it is my choice and one that allows me to blog with less stress and much more enjoyment.
I certainly appreciate anyone pointing out something I may have overlooked in my process, I have done the same with other people – you never know when it can make a real big difference to someone’s online presence. As long as the feedback is done in a courteous manner, there is never anything wrong with pointing it out.
What’s your opinion… is this (or was it) an area of stress with you as a blogger? If so, how do you deal with it? I’m always open to new ideas.
