Reminder to be Prepared

Well Old Man Winter hit hard last night!  So many things can happen unexpectedly and it pays to be prepared no matter what.

Last night we were forewarned very well by the weatherman/lady/people… oh wait, forecasters, and we were ready for it.  But a few days ago more snow came than expected and very quickly.  There were about 1500 people stuck on Nova Scotia’s toll highway.  It got so bad, so fast they had to shut the highway down and were not fully prepared to deal with everything that followed.  Thank goodness, no one was seriously hurt; that’s a lot of people and cars, to be at a standstill for over 12 hours!

It’s a good reminder to everyone to be as prepared as possible for a variety of “Disasters”.  You need to think about preparing both your home and car for emergencies as well as your family, and even your office (especially if you work at home -Get a backup system in place – NOW!).

The Emergency Measures section of the Halifax Regional Municipality  website (where I live) has a great section to help you prepare for any type of situation, lots of checklists etc – which I love!

Google's neat stuff

I love this one!  I like my Gmail mostly because it is so east to access, as well as sort and file items.

Today, Google added some themes to their gmail settings, and I love it!  Immediately I had to switch one one, the Notebook!  I am not certain why, maybe because I like writing things in coil scribblers, but I am always attracted to themes with notebooks, scribblers etc.

To change your simply go into the settings tab in your gmail account and make your pick.  There are plain colours and pictures as well.. like the beach – that would be nice to cream about as you sort through your inbox!

Google has tons of tools, and most are free. Just go to google’s homepage and where you see the tabs for “web, images, new, video” etc at the top left, click on the more button!  Tons of great tools in here.  I’d be surprised if you cannot find something useful. Read the rest of this entry »

Have you been thinking of becoming a Virtual Assistant or hiring one?

If you are looking for information on Virtual Assistants, whether it is to become one or to hire one for your business, I strongly suggest you check out one of the world’s largest online Virtual Assistant forums – VAnetworking.

VAnetworking is geared to helping all parts of the Virtual Assistant equation :

The Business  + a Virtual Assistant = All work done and time available to grow business.

This forum was started by a fellow Canadian, Tawnya Sutherland of British Columbia,  and has lots of information that a businesses can use when making the decision to hire a VA to help them run their business more efficiently.

As for VAs, it is one of the best VA organizations around when it comes to having support for starting, maintaining and growing your own VA business.  VAnetworking is celebrating its 5th year in business and has been having a celebration for the last 8 weeks, that continues on for 12 more.  Anyone who joins VAnetworking can participate in the Birthday Bash.

For resources, whether they be for the business owner of a VA, I cannot say enough good things about this organization.  It’s simply the best!  There is a lot there, so take your time when surfing about, but you’ll find it’s worth the time investment.

Spring Ahead and Fall Back

clock Spring Ahead and Fall Back

This is a reminder to everyone that this Saturday – overnight – is Daylight Savings time.  Remember to change all your clocks back one hour, technically at 2am Sunday morning, but it’s best to do it before you hit the hay!

For North Americans, as of March 2007, Daylight Savings changed to the first Sunday in November and the second Sunday in March.

Ever have more questions about Daylight Savings, the Canadian National Research Council has some great information on their site.

MOO Cards – what the …???

Sometimes I realize the titles of my posts are bizarre… but they are what they are!

My sister has an online store, Scotiamade at Etsy and keeps busy creating cards when she is not working at her day job. Etsy  (as in Betsy without the B) is a site where people handcrafting items can have a “Store” and sell their wares.  You can find almost anything here… Etsy.

My point here is about the MOO cards however… Cheryl has been telling me about these great cards for a while, and I didn’t really get it until I was helping her at a local craft show last weekend and she showed me her MOO cards.  MOO is the name of a company in England that prints business cards and more.

Wow! They are so great and what makes them memorable to me is the way they feel…. so smooth.  The printing is very clear and they come in a neat little box.  So,  off I went home and immediately did what she had been telling me for a while – and looked at their website.

I am now in the process of ordering more of my own cards. There are many neat options available such as ordering 50 cards but with several designs, or 100 mini moo cards all with a different design – they don’t all have to be the same! The things you can do at MOO!

One of these days I will have to look up why they are called MOO .
