All right… this is more of a vent, but hopefully it can change the way at least even one person sets up their forum or membership system.
Trying to keep on top of all things Virtual, I have a Google Alert set up for the term “Virtual Assistant” (as well as a few other terms, including my own name)…anyhow – today it popped up a discussion post regarding Virtual Assistants and some online support forums available to help VAs run their businesses. It was a great post and I wanted to make a comment and add another choice to the options listed (my always favourite one, VANetworking) … and here is where the problem started.
I consider myself fairly net-savvy, especially with regards to joining online groups and asking or posting questions and answering them as well. Sometimes you can just post a comment and sometimes you have to join the group.
Resources galore
Having joined several online groups and forums, I have found that there are many, many user-friendly tools and resources out there to help businesses, finding them and having the time available is holding people back. Whether it’s by teaching you something new or showing you how to use something you already own, there are many resources out there to help you and your business.
Just yesterday I was speaking with a friend who had bought a headset for her computer so she can participate in one part of a course she is taking. I told her to call me when she had it and I’d show her how to chat with me on the computer using Skype. Since that chat, she has looked into signing up for one of Skype’s accounts that will save their business money each month. Until I talked to her, she never even knew it existed.
I have been doing weekly seminars online through several groups – learning many new things that help my business. As a Virtual Assistant, there are many options and methods of doing work for clients, keeping on top of new ways is mandatory if I want to better serve my clients.
Speaking of family…
The other day I was thinking about how I try to balance work and family as I wrote a post on this blog and it got me thinking about how I keep in touch with the world while working from home, by myself.
Most notably, I had realized there had been a few high notes in my business this week and one of the people I always share news with was unavailable. My husband, Marco, is always here and listens well, but I share a lot with my mother as well and she was golfing in PEI, with her sister from Toronto and another friend . Marco, the consummate manager, always takes a business-view of my happenings and questions; but Mom has a different take on things. Sometimes their opinions are the same, sometimes they offer very different perspectives – both of which I respect.
Mainly I realized that I missed sharing the news with her this week. Many of my friends work, so sharing news with them in the daytime is out of the questions (see blog notes from Wednesday). My mother is retired and when not out golfing, swimming, playing bridge or walking (she does keep busy) she is usually there to chat when I take a break to talk (see Tip # 3 from Wednesday’s post).
