Danielle, I believe it is true that if they are set to nofollow then they will not help from the SEO point of view, but they are still helpful if they are dofollow (spam can be an issue and can affect your site - but if you approve your comments first you can control the spam) and for other users to see your knowledge and have a place to connect with you.

Isn't it true though that MOST blogs comments sections are set to "nofollow" the website link so they are not useful for SEO purposes?

I set my blog to be "dofollow" so that people who comment get a link that is recognized by the search engines.

And I ALWAYS watch for blogs that use CommentLuv - it is just one more way that blog owners can help those who comment by featuring a link to their latest blog post. I like the ones that allow you to leave a Twitter link, too, but I haven't gotten around to adding that yet!

I've had that exact experience with my mom! I need to remove the Google search box from her toolbar because she keeps trying to use it to access web addresses. Also, she's terrible with facebook and now she hates it. Certain people are not cut out for Web 2.0! I didn't even bother trying to explain what Skype was when I was at uni.

If you are presenting in front of an audience, I would suggest you use your Powerpoint slides as visual aids and not as text support. Keep your narrative different from your slides. If the audience can just read your slides, they won't pay attention to you. Use the slides for visual aids such as Smart Art graphics, tables, comparison charts, etc. Many people learn from sight and they will remember a great slide graphic more than text.

Make eye contact with the audience. Also, try to make a connection with them at the beginning of your presentation. Make a joke or comment about a current event. Find out if they are hockey fans, or baseball fans. Once you know what the majority of them like, you can use references to this topic in any examples you talk about in your presentation. You will keep their attention and they will be sure to remember you.

Just a few tips for presentations. Good luck!

Here is a niche idea for those of you who are already working as virtual assistants and for those who are looking to become a virtual assistant. Internet marketers are always busy and on the go in promoting their online business. They're looking for virtual assistants to help with daily customer relationship support in return the marketers will take the assistants under their wings and mentor them. There is a home study course that specializes in the virtual assistant to the Internet marketing guru niche. Take a look at this site: http://www.gurubuddysystem.org .

Thanks for sharing that story Kathy! Though "I feel I have a bit more insight into Lyn" makes me nervous - what kind of insight must you have if our connection is through a shared knowledge of a Maritimes bar! LOL! I do thank you for putting us out of our misery though!

And I agree - I never feel alone. Many people ask me how I can work 'by myself' every day but I'm never by myself. If I have a burning question I can Skype a colleague in the same country or across the other side of the world. Facebook connects me with many friends, family and business colleagues. We're never truly alone. :)
