The Anticipation is building…
Well… here it is Tuesday and I am all packed and ready to go to my first ever conference with fellow virtual assistants.
I am heading to Niagara Falls, Canada for the Forum on Virtual Assistance (FoVA) to learn and share and connect with many people in the VA industry.
I have been networking online for almost a year now at VAnetworking, CVAC and several other places. I have also been working with, or creating friendships with, other VAs that I met online.
Networking online can be scary for some people but I love it. In fact, in my banking days, I had several jobs that had me connecting with others via telephone – and really it is the same principle, even if it was in the days before cell phones or email. I encountered these people daily in my job, but never face to face. I met my husband from a friend I worked with ‘virtually’ in 1988. She and I finally met, a friendship was created that still exists today; and her fiancé introduced me to my husband. If I had never taken the time to meet her at the bank function for all the departments, my life would have been very different.
My favourite aspect of online or telephone networking is when the time comes that you finally have an opportunity to meet those people in person – face-to-face. I find this really solidifies any online or remote relationship and takes it to another level.
So, my bags are ready, the family is kicking off school early to drive me to the airport and I cannot wait to get there and meet all my ‘friends’.
Watch out FoVA here I come!
Party on… virtually!
Well, the holidays are a week away and I am off tomorrow night to enjoy my Virtual Assistant Christmas Party. You’ll note from my post on December 5th that I do enjoy my Christmas Parties!
And why not, food, friends, meeting new people, prizes, music, sometimes dancing (I remember one great Royal Bank party – we were dancing in the branch, on top of the wickets, to Bananarama’s Venus!) … and of course a few drinks or two…
My family as well as some friends and business connections are chuckling already about my party tomorrow – because it is a virtual party. I will be here in my office, with my snacks, headset and microphone, a couple drinks and plan to have a great time with all my VAnetworking friends from all over the world! There will be people from British Columbia, me from Nova Scotia, Ontario, Texas, Michigan, New Jersey, Australia and more. I am hoping to win some of the prizes – there’s apparently thousands of dollars in prizes up for grabs.
So laugh all you want, but no matter what I plan to have a fantastic work party tomorrow! Working virtually means doing many things differently – even parties!
Forum foes
Having recently begun the process of starting my Virtual Assistant business, I found myself joining several on-line forums as a source of information and support.
On-line forums are meeting places on the internet where members pose questions or ideas for discussion. They are not much different than “pre world wide web forums”; other than having a cyber location and web based method of communication.
Participation in an on-line forum is done by someone posting a topic to discuss, which is the start of a “thread”. A “thread” is a string of comments regarding the topic.
My recent ventures into forums have provided me with endless amounts of information as well as guidance and support. The only drawback I have found is from people posting items not relevant or in the spirit of the forum.
