Networking in Halifax Dartmouth

Networking has been a hot topic with me lately, mostly because I have been seeing results from it.  I belong to one “formal” networking club, but attend many others in the local area and I also network online. My efforts so far have allowed me to connect with 3 clients, one of whom has referred another. Networking does payoff!

Lately, I find myself  telling others about several of these venues and have decided I would post a few of the “places”  where I network, should others be looking for such information. Some are a drop in and have a nominal fee to cover coffee, snacks and some are a membership commitment with fees involved. Either way, I highly recommend all business owners and professionals getting out on a regular basis and making contact with others. Read the rest of this entry »

Networking… what method do you prefer?

I have been doing a lot of networking in the past few months.  As a new business owner, it’s a real good way to get the word out about your business and services, especially to the local business community.  I also do quite a bit of online networking, and I must say both have paid off.

So far I have landed one client from online networking, one through Twitter, and participated in a  very interesting “Looking to Hire a VA process” also through Twitter. Local networking has seen more understanding and interest spread about virtual assistants – and I have also landed a client through word of mouth/referrals.  Read the rest of this entry »

Why join an online group?

Many fellow Virtual Assistants probably run into this same situation; I have several times lately while networking and discussing my line of work with others.

Recently, when talking to someone about how she can investigate becoming a virtual assistant (VA) herself, I referred her to the online group, VAnetworking.  Once she had a chance to look it over, we talked – and she told me she didn’t understand why I would belong to it.

My answer was simple… support!  Then I added to it; access to loads of information, meeting other VAs, and learning tips and tricks from them during the weekly networking sessions were a few of the first things out of my mouth. After giving some specific examples, she understood better my reasons. Read the rest of this entry »

Party on… virtually!

Well, the holidays are a week away and I am off tomorrow night to enjoy my Virtual Assistant Christmas Party.  You’ll note from my post on December 5th that I do enjoy my Christmas Parties!

And why not, food, friends, meeting new people, prizes, music, sometimes dancing (I remember one great Royal Bank party – we were dancing in the branch, on top of the wickets, to Bananarama’s Venus!) … and of course a few drinks or two… icon smile Party on... virtually!

My  family as well as some friends and business connections are chuckling already about my party tomorrow – because it is a virtual party.  I will be here in my office, with my snacks, headset and microphone, a couple drinks and plan to have a great time with all my VAnetworking friends from all over the world!  There will be people from British Columbia, me from Nova Scotia, Ontario, Texas, Michigan, New Jersey, Australia and more.  I am hoping to win some of the prizes – there’s apparently thousands of dollars in prizes up for grabs.

So laugh all you want, but no matter what I plan to have a fantastic work party tomorrow!  Working virtually means doing many things differently – even parties!

Business networking

When I started in the CEED program this past August, a component of it was attending at least two networking events each month.  Networking was mu biggest fear. Making it a part of the program is understandable since it is a good way to get the word out about your business as well as meet many other business owners and professionals in your local area.  You’ll never know who you’ll run into.

I looked around, and decided to join a local Business Breakfast Club. It’s a small group of 14 that meets every week. What I like about this BBC is how you really get to know the others in the group and they work hard to make referrals to each other; it’s like your own sales team.  Also, each week we each do a 90 second intro, so it helps people like me who need to get comfortable doing this.  I definitely feel better about doing my “elevator speech” now than I did in September.
