And the winner is… Janet Barclay

Congratulations Janet, for guessing the word JUST as the one we were searching for in the contest. Just is a word that can be removed from many of our sentences, spoken or written. Think about it when you go to use it next time.  Especially this sentence – I was just calling you for….

I will contact you for an address to mail out your prize, the print from Maria Erman Photography.

Online Networking adds value in many ways

Networking is something I truly enjoy, whether in person or online.  I have been doing a lot of online networking, through Twitter, Facebook, Linked In and a few of the online communities I belong to as well:  VAclassroom, VAnetworking and CVAC.

I have been learning how valuable these online connections can be by some of my recent in-person experiences.  The latest was today at a local networking event I attend, DartNet.

There was a fellow at the other end of the table and I couldn’t place a name to his face, but I recognized him from somewhere.  Finally, I saw his name on the sign in sheet and looked over at him and  said “That’s where I know you from, the PodCamp.”

He nodded and said, ” Yes,  I know your face too, from Twitter.”  icon smile Online Networking adds value in many ways Read the rest of this entry »

Guess this Four Letter Word… and Win

I’ve decided to have a bit of fun with this post.  It was inspired by the CEED workshop I attended last night – Entrepreneurial Trinity by the Phone Lady.

Mary Jane Copps is the Phone Lady and she trains people on how to communicate on the phone whether you are the receptionist, customer service, sales people or business owner.   It was a great workshop, Mary Jane had some fantastic tips, as well as helping many of us figure out an effective way to make a sales call.

Sales Call, not something I really think of myself as doing as a virtual assistant – and most in the class were thinking – Not the Cold Call! But really, these skills can be used for times when you have to “sell” your services to others; returning inquiries about your services, meeting new people who ask “what do you do” or any time where you need to talk about you and your business to others.

One big tip Mary Jane had was a word that she wants everyone to stop using.  She told us to take it out of our conversations where we are selling our service or business.  And this is where the “fun” part of this post begins.

The first person to guess the word (leave it in a comment her on the blog) will win a prize.  I’ve teamed up with a colleague, Maria Erman, of Maria Erman Photography, she is donating the prize -a print of Fisherman’s Cove here in Nova Scotia. Read the rest of this entry »

Networking in Halifax Dartmouth

Networking has been a hot topic with me lately, mostly because I have been seeing results from it.  I belong to one “formal” networking club, but attend many others in the local area and I also network online. My efforts so far have allowed me to connect with 3 clients, one of whom has referred another. Networking does payoff!

Lately, I find myself  telling others about several of these venues and have decided I would post a few of the “places”  where I network, should others be looking for such information. Some are a drop in and have a nominal fee to cover coffee, snacks and some are a membership commitment with fees involved. Either way, I highly recommend all business owners and professionals getting out on a regular basis and making contact with others. Read the rest of this entry »

Networking… what method do you prefer?

I have been doing a lot of networking in the past few months.  As a new business owner, it’s a real good way to get the word out about your business and services, especially to the local business community.  I also do quite a bit of online networking, and I must say both have paid off.

So far I have landed one client from online networking, one through Twitter, and participated in a  very interesting “Looking to Hire a VA process” also through Twitter. Local networking has seen more understanding and interest spread about virtual assistants – and I have also landed a client through word of mouth/referrals.  Read the rest of this entry »
