One of the better Facebook changes

… but I don’t want to mix my personal Facebook with business.

This is one of the most common statements I hear when clients are talking about expanding into Facebook for their business.

You should know however,  when Facebook made their upgrades and changes in February, they did some great things with their Business Pages.

They now run as a separate page from your own personal page. There is no longer a crossover and you do not see your name on the Business Page activity. Your personal page can remain very separate from your business.

To make it work well, you should try to move your ‘business friends’ over to your Fan Page by sending them a note and an invite to join you there.

The Pages have so many benefits for businesses; no limit to the numbers of fans who can join you, the ability to import your blogs, post events, send updates to all fans, have discussions, post videos, links to your YouTube account, badges and links for your Linked In or Twitter profiles and the list goes on…

Some businesses work with Facebook more than they do their website…and for some people that works well. It’s all dependant upon your business, your marketing plan and your ability to take some time and join in social networking.

Don't sell yourself short

As part of my Charter Membership with Nova Scotia’s Come to life program, I recently attended a one day Media Training Session.  It was meant to help the members learn how to “tell your story” whether to print media, or radio or tv.

Jim Meek, Jennifer MacIsaac and Hugh Fraser of Bristol Group were on hand to lead us through a day of learning many new things; most notably writing press releases and being interviewed on camera.

I think the biggest message I received from the day of training  was that “I have to stop selling my skills short”.

It’s easy to do, most of us find it very difficult to talk bout ourselves and our accomplishments and abilities. Sure, we can rave about others, but when it comes to “me”, most people tend to take a step back and save the “raving” for others.

As a business owner, trying to sell your services to others, it is not the way to do it.  You have to train yourself to speak up more about you and your services or products.  If you don’t tell people they are quality products and services and of value to others, who will?

Online Networking adds value in many ways

Networking is something I truly enjoy, whether in person or online.  I have been doing a lot of online networking, through Twitter, Facebook, Linked In and a few of the online communities I belong to as well:  VAclassroom, VAnetworking and CVAC.

I have been learning how valuable these online connections can be by some of my recent in-person experiences.  The latest was today at a local networking event I attend, DartNet.

There was a fellow at the other end of the table and I couldn’t place a name to his face, but I recognized him from somewhere.  Finally, I saw his name on the sign in sheet and looked over at him and  said “That’s where I know you from, the PodCamp.”

He nodded and said, ” Yes,  I know your face too, from Twitter.”  icon smile Online Networking adds value in many ways Read the rest of this entry »

Great advice for anyone …

I ran into a situation the other day, where I decided that I would not make a request to someone I do business with.  We only recently began working together and I felt – in my mind – that what I was looking for was too much to ask for and too soon.  It’s the Canadian in me… we can be very complacent, I’m told.

Funny enough…a few days later, through one of our conversations, this person offered up exactly what I had been looking for. It was by chance.  Once it was out there; I told her that I would love it and that I had been contemplating asking her  the same thing, but decided not to …the bit of advice she gave me was:

The answer is always no until you ask!  The worst answer you will get is no, which leaves you at the same spot…odds are, you’ll get an answer to push you further towards your goals in life.

Great advice from a great business woman!  Something I will definitely keep in mind as I continue on my path of running a successful Virtual Assistant business.

Can you call? Check before you dial that number…

If you are a business owner and make calls or faxes to promote your product or service, be sure you check out the new rules and regulations as we get closer to September 30, 2008 – the day that Canada’s National Do Not Call List launches.

“The Unsolicited Telecommunications Rules apply to all persons who make calls or send faxes to sell or promote a product or service, or to request donations. Calls made for the purposes of market research, polls or surveys are not considered telemarketing calls and are exempt from the Unsolicited Telecommunications Rules.”

Fines can range from $1,500 to $15,000, so it is vital that businesses know which rules apply to them. There are certain exemptions and also rules on automatic dialing devices.  You can check out the policies on the CRTC’s website:  http://www.crtc.gc.ca/ENG/dncl_info.htm#tel

Make sure you know what rules apply to your and your business, check before you call.
