Hello, my name is Kathy. I am addicted to Twitter

DC 032 300x225 Hello, my name is Kathy. I am addicted to Twitter

A very cold and windy day - but that is me by the White House!!!

Well… here I am in Fairfax, Virginia – very close to Washington DC.  I am spending a week at a conference, 7 Event , to learn some new skills and bring more to my business and clients.I went with Tracey Daviero (A friend and fellow VA) and was a guest participant of Paige Stapleton and Brian Stark – and based on what i have experienced thus far I want to thank all three of them as I would not have heard of this without my connection to Tracey.

Now,  most of you have an inkling of how much I use Twitter, icon smile Hello, my name is Kathy. I am addicted to Twitter , but this conference was different.  The leaders wanted us to focus on the message and (rightly so) requested that no laptops or phones were allowed in the seminar rooms and sessions.

So….. I figure I can handle this – my Blackberry is turned off anyhow because of the exorbitant roaming fees.  Handle is wrong… as we go through all the fabulous sessions I realize how much I am missing being able to tweet the inspiring words of the people leading us at the event. I am just itching to post stuff!  And yes, that was me in the lobby posting tweets and updates during our breaks and as fast as I can so that I can get out and meet some of the attendees and sponsors.

So I do the next best thing – I make note of the most inspiring statements and words of wisdom I am hearing.  I have such an urge to share and no means to do so.  It`s kind of frustrating but really makes me see how much I love to tweet!  I figure the next best thing would be to take my list of handwritten tweets and post them here so I CAN share them with you.

Enjoy!

Is it the Real You online?

I received one of the best compliments the other day.  It came from a friend and fellow Virtual Assistant (VA), Tracey D’Averio, with whom I had originally connected online through the VAnetworking forum and Twitter.

reunion 09 533 edited 1 150x150 Is it the Real You online? We had the opportunity to meet in person after 8 months when we both attended a conference this past June and roomed together with another VA.  In August, my family and I  were on vacation in Ontario and Tracey and I got together for a visit. It was here that she passed on the compliment. A simple offhanded statement, but meant a lot to me.

The compliment?  She told me that I am “exactly the same person online as I am in person“.

Why am I honoured by her compliment? As someone who works virtually with most clients I know one of the most important aspects of my success is my ability to project my true self to my clients and other colleagues. We rarely get to meet in person so this feeling is vital to having good virtual relationships.

My business is ‘me’ and being real and authentic will ensure others can ‘see’ who I am even if we never meet in person. I try to make it work just as it would if we were working ‘live’.

The fact that Tracey told me she felt I was the ‘real me’ reassured me that indeed the person I project online is me.  I hope to keep it this way to continue with my virtual success.

How can you make sure that you remain real? Simple, act exactly as you would if everyone you encounter were standing right there in front of you and could see every action you make along with hearing every word you say. Authenticity and Transparency…that’s all it is.

Brad Paisley (sorry, I’m a country fan) has a song ‘Online‘ – great song and video but don’t follow this example, being better online won’t help you in the end. Be real.

Interested in Social Media?

As many of you know I have been doing some additional training in order to become “certified” as a Social Media Specialist – my kids actually refer to the word “certified” in a  much different manner. “Oh there’s Mom, on that Twitter thing” … anyhow, the point of my post today is that many people are jumping into Social Media, even if only to try it out, as truly it may not work for all types of business and people.

If you are looking to do this type of work and want to learn more or even get into social media for yourself , then you may want to try out VAclassroom’s Social Media course .

The course takes you through 8 modules and covers Strategy and Planning, Profile Management, Marketing on Twitter, Facebook, Video and other Social Media channels.  Reporting and Online Reputation management is also covered in the course. [Read more...]

Twitter Password tips

>> Please note this post is intended for people who use Twitter and related applications.  If you are looking to start out on Twitter and other social media channels but are unsure how/what to do, please contact Time on Task – we can help!

———————————————————————————————————————

This past week I ran into several issues I did not realize were happening until a few days later – all related to Twitter passwords and some external twitter applications.

In a nutshell, you have to keep in mind what applications you are using that require your twitter username and password.  If an application requires this for use on a  regular basis and you change your twitter password, you may have to change the password on these external applications as well.  Two prime examples are Tweetdeck and Tweetlater. Newspaper in Halifax – looking for ideas

Last month I attended the Third Wednesday meetup in Halifax at the Foggy Goggle – people from the area interested in and using social media. It’s a group that gets together monthly to discuss and share. At this meet the group was discussing how social media is affecting print media.

There were a few first timers there, including myself,a few others and also Dan Legere  from the Halifax’s Chronicle Herald newspaper. The Herald has been in the news lately itself, due to cutbacks and a few layoffs. But it was great to see someone there listening to ideas of others.  And listen he must have.

Today, I see that the Herald is hosting a live chat on social media.  They want to hear directly from people how they can change.  How can print media translate itself into something new, innovative and cost-effective?

If you have any ideas to help them make changes that will keep print media devloping audiences, please join in.  I will be and am very interested to see how it goes and what people have to say. More importantly, what will happen in the future.
