Whose using Social Media anyhow?

Michael Stelzner recently published a report on the Social Media Marketing Industry.  The report is based upon a survey of more than 850 social media users.  It has some great information, especially for those new to Twitter, Linked In and Facebook – it will answer some questions you have about how and why people are using these sites.

One surprise for many people will be the age of people using Social Media.  When I talk to many people they are under the assumption that social media is dominated by young people. That’s not exactly  the case anymore. While it may have started out that way, especially for sites like MySpace and Facebook – the times they are a-changing.

Stelzner’s report shows that more than 78% of those who responded were between the ages of 30 and 59, with the average age group being 40-49!  BiZReport recently reported on the fact that Facebook is getting Gray – users are getting older as more join in this social site.  On average, Twitter users are older than those using Facebook and MySpace, and as more businesses and people begin using these sites, that upward age trend likely continue.

Something to keep in mind when chatting with others about social media and social networking sites.

Online Networking adds value in many ways

Networking is something I truly enjoy, whether in person or online.  I have been doing a lot of online networking, through Twitter, Facebook, Linked In and a few of the online communities I belong to as well:  VAclassroom, VAnetworking and CVAC.

I have been learning how valuable these online connections can be by some of my recent in-person experiences.  The latest was today at a local networking event I attend, DartNet.

There was a fellow at the other end of the table and I couldn’t place a name to his face, but I recognized him from somewhere.  Finally, I saw his name on the sign in sheet and looked over at him and  said “That’s where I know you from, the PodCamp.”

He nodded and said, ” Yes,  I know your face too, from Twitter.”  icon smile Online Networking adds value in many ways Read the rest of this entry »

Does Twitter work for business? You betcha!

Many of my friends have no idea what I am talking about when I refer to Twitter, and honestly in Halifax-Dartmouth when I mention it only a few people know what it is.  They may have heard the term Twitter, but have no idea what it is. So,  I feel I should do a little educating here…I tend to describe Twitter as somewhat similar to Facebook, but without all the extra applications, that (sorry friends!) I find annoying and time wasters (you know the aquariums, gardens etc).

Twitter is a micro-blog, what you do is post updates of your life/business and you only have up to 140 characters to do this (just as you do in Facebook, for those who use that). You “follow” others and they follow you, sounds kind of  “stalker-like” but you can have control on both sides.

I post some personal things and some business, probably a mix of 35/60 and the other 5% I try to promote my business in a stronger manner.  How can this be useful?

Have you twittered today?

Twitter, if you have no idea what this means ~ I twittered about that today ~ then you have not yet seen the newest of the Social Networking sites.

Twitter is a site that allows you to “Follow” other people and have people “Follow” you.   What you do on Twitter is post simple comments, with a limit of 140 characters. It’s a mini-blog really, and you can use it quickly and efficiently.  There are no extras like aquariums, gardens, games, etc as you would find on Facebook, and truly, those are the parts of Facebook that I find annoying. You have  to download an application and then look after it.  Finding time for that is hard!

Many Twitterers use Twitter for a mix of personal and business.  Used effectively, you can make Twitter a part of your marketing tactics for your business.  Buzz and Viral marketing are becoming a vital part of marketing for business.  And why not, they are very cost effective if used properly. I have heard several stories of people gaining new business and clients from their Twittering.
