This past week I ran into several issues I did not realize were happening until a few days later – all related to Twitter passwords and some external twitter applications.

In a nutshell, you have to keep in mind what applications you are using that require your twitter username and password.  If an application requires this for use on a  regular basis and you change your twitter password, you may have to change the password on these external applications as well.  Two prime examples are Tweetdeck and Tweetlater.

Tweetdeck (which is a fantastic desktop organizer for twitter), I learned the hard way a few months ago when I changed my password and got locked out of my Tweetdeck account.  Unsure what had happened I did some searching and figured out how to remedy the situation.  Many of these applications are free and sometimes that means support information is not always readily available. Follow this process to keep everything running smooth:

  1. If you plan to change your twitter password and use Tweetdeck, sign out of Tweetdeck first.
  2. Go to Twitter – sign in and change your twitter password.
  3. Open Tweetdeck again and use your new password to sign in.

Tweetlater is another tool/application I use for my clients and myself, that allows for automated messages among other features. No matter what your opinion on the auto messages (and there are many), they are available to use  and many do, and not just for the welcome – type message.

This past weekend, part of the Tweetlater issues were related to Oprah bringing awareness to Twitter and causing and overload of Tweets!  Tweetlater also requires your username and password, so even though you may have set up a bunch of auto tweets to go out for a month – check it once a week to make sure they are being published.  That password could stop some of them and you don’t even realize it.

Hope these tips help you manage your social media a bit more effectively.
